Customer Success Story: Splunk Cloud Migration

The Customer

Our customer is a New Zealand airline and this project was undertaken in 2023.

The Challenge

Our customer is investing in digital dexterity, with a focus on ensuring resiliency and optimising experiences. They have a strategy to become one of the world’s leading digital airlines and to achieve this, adopting a Cloud service was essential.

A further factor in their wish to migrate to a Cloud service was that the On-premise environments were relatively complex for the current license size and had proven difficult to upgrade.

This migration was slightly more difficult than other ones we have performed. It was not a straightforward packaging of the On-premise environment to be copied onto the Cloud. This was because of the complexity of the number of App teams and data sources involved. There was continuous consultation with App owners to ensure that everything was migrated correctly.

Due to the age of their environment, there were a number of outdated dashboards. This meant there was extra effort involved as we had to fix things as we went.

The Solution

The solution for our customer was to migrate them from Splunk On-premise to Splunk Cloud in an Agile fashion.

This decision was reached following GKC facilitating and documenting key design principles and a high-level design document, which took into consideration a long term and sustainable solution for the business. GKC also facilitated workshops and provided guidance and recommendations to the customer.

We helped them understand the differences between on-prem solution and Splunk Cloud to ensure necessary on-prem components such as HF and agent configuration were planned for in the design.

The Outcome

Migrating to Splunk Cloud allows the customer to further their ambitions of becoming a leading digital airline and removes the difficulty of upgrading their On-premise environments.

The client was migrating legacy workloads to AWS, so we leveraged PrivateLink to improve security and minimise bandwidth costs. Initially Splunk was not aware of the client’s need for PrivateLink connectivity, so GKC worked with Splunk and the customer to ensure the solution met all requirements.

Our client’s observability was originally split over several tools, including Splunk enterprise and SumoLogic. We gave our customer the confidence that Splunk Cloud was the way forward on their observability journey and are supporting them to migrate away from SumoLogic. This outcome has helped to streamline their environments.

The customer is interested in open telemetry and is looking to trial Splunk Observability Cloud, migrating to Splunk Cloud simplifies this process. This is another piece of work that GKC will be supporting them with.
